Summary of the trainings for specialists from Benin Republic during the continuance phase of the IMPETUS project (August 2009 to January 2011)

During the past nine years (2000-2009) of interdisciplinary research in Benin Republic, the research project IMPETUS gathered a wealth of results and developed several operational tools and decision support systems, which have the potential to contribute to the sustainable development in Benin. A prerequisite is, however, the effective transfer of data and knowl-edge to the responsible institutions. Therefore, within the continuance phase of the IMPETUS project, a total of ten scientists and technicians from partner institutions in Benin had been invited for specific training courses at the universities of Bonn and Cologne. The Beninese specialists received training courses in Germany in December 2009, April 2010 and September 2010 during five to ten days each, in order to serve as multipliers in their home country.

Thus, the training focused on the transfer of detailed knowledge regarding the administration and application of decision support systems in the environmental sector as well as the GeoNetwork and the digital interactive IMPETUS atlas for Benin Republic. The decision support systems are spatially explicit applications of numerical models or data bases, which have been tested with respect to their applicability in Benin within the IMPETUS project and which have been integrated into a unique graphical user interface. The participants received training for the following systems:

The systems facilitate the structured storage, processing and visualisation of information in the sectors of water and environmental management as well as agricultural production. Furthermore, they support the sustainable planning of water and land resources under changing climatic conditions. The participants were members of the technical staff of the Ministry for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Benin Republic and its subordinate services as well as the State Agency for Water Resources (Direction Générale de l’Eau).

In addition, great importance was given to the training of academic staff of the country’s most important university Abomey-Calavi, who are believed to be the most important multiplicators for the transfer of knowledge to the future generation. The training enabled the participants to teach other staff members of their respective institution to apply and make use of the software tools and  data bases. Additional training courses in Benin have been carried out by the participants and are still on-going, which were organized and funded by the Beninese Center for Partnership and Expertise for the development (CePED), which is directly under the minister for planning and development (Minstère de la Prospective, du Développement, de l’Evaluation des Politiques Publiques et de la Coordination de l’Action Gouvernementale).

Summary of the training of managers from Morocco under the researchproject developing sustainable research expertise on the basis of the GLOWA IMPETUS project in West Africa (August 2009 - January 2011)

During the past nine years (2000-2009) of interdisciplinary research in Morocco, the research project IMPETUS gathered a wealth of results and developed several operational tools and decision support systems, which have the potential to contribute to the sustainable develop-ment in Morocco. A prerequisite is, however, the effective transfer of data and knowledge to the responsible institutions. Therefore, within the continuance phase of the IMPETUS project, a total of nine scientists and technicians from partner institutions in Morocco had been invited for specific training courses at the universities of Bonn. The Moroccan specialists received training courses in Germany in December 2009, June 2010 and October 2010 during seven to nine days each, in order to serve as multipliers in their home country.

Thus, the training fo-cused on the transfer of detailed knowledge regarding the administration and application of decision support systems in the environmental sector as well as the GeoNetwork and the digi-tal interactive IMPETUS atlas for Morocco. The decision support systems are spatially explicit applications of numerical models or data bases, which have been tested with respect to their applicability in Morocco within the IMPETUS project and which have been integrated into a unique graphical user interface. The systems facilitate the structured storage, processing and visualisation of information in the sectors of water, forestry and environmental management as well as agricultural production. Furthermore, they support the sustainable planning of water and land resources under changing climatic conditions. The participants were mainly members of the technical staff of the water sector of the Moroccan Ministry for Environment and its national and regional sub-ordinate services in Rabat, Agadir and Ouarzazate (Secrétariat d'État chargé de l'Eau et de l'Environnement SEEE, Direction de la Recherche et de la Planification en Eau DRPE, Agence de Bassin Hydraulique de Souss-Massa-Drâa ABH).

Furthermore, members of the regional administrations of the Ministry of Agriculture are represented (Office Régional de Mise en Valeur Agricole d'Ouarzazate ORMVAO, Direction Régionale des Eaux et Forêts d'Ouarzazate). Great importance was given to the training of academic staff of the university Ibn Zohr in Agadir, because the university can support scientifically the application and fur-ther development of the systems. The knowledge of the systems is transferred via trainings and e-learning to the students who represent the future executives of the Moroccan admini-stration. Additional training courses in Morocco have been carried out by the participants and are still on-going. The future trainings in Morocco will be organized by an association which is in the course of formation, and by the partner institutions.
